Posts Tagged ‘Life in Raleigh’

Having been born and raised in Gary, Indiana (1st 18years), I’ve lived in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area since June 2001. The similarities between Indiana and North Carolina are in most instances subtle, and in some instances striking.

Indiana, Northwest Indiana in particular, has suffered greatly due to the global economy, primarily through the loss of blue collar work in steel mills and manufacturing.

The Raleigh-Durham area is positively affected by it’s proximity to Research Triangle Parks Biomedical and Technology focused industry. These industry’s and the major banking industry presence in Charlotte has allowed both the Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte job force in North Carolina to avoid being negatively affected by the global economy.

However, rural North Carolina has been devastated by the effects of the global economy. Free trade agreements have negatively affected both North Carolina and Indiana with respects to jobs being lost to cheap labor located in places foreign to US soil.

How fitting is it that the two primary’s that I believe will decide who gets the Democrat Presidential nomination are the Indiana and North Carolina primaries.

The North Carolina voter has a unique paradox because it ecompasses voters who have not only been negatively affected by the global economy but also positively and negatively affected by the US’s global war on terror.

Eastern North Carolina is home to a vast number of US military installations such as:

The Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, NC

Fort Bragg Army Installation near Fayetteville, NC

Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville, NC

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base

Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Installation

The US Cost Guard Installation in Elizabeth City, NC

The Marine Corps Air Station in Jacksonville, NC

While North Carolina bases have seen an increase in military manpower assigned to it’s bases (thus creating economic stimulus to the communities they surround), they have also had to deal with the loss of life and problems facing soldiers who return with mental and physical injuries associated with serving in the two wars the US is currently involved in, Afghanistan and Iraq.

While Indiana as well as other states certainly are dealing with similar issues, North Carolina is one of the epicenters for these concerns in whole US of A.

That’s actually the way I view Northwest Indiana in the area of job loss to foreign labor; an epicenter of blue collar job loss. In this area, the job losses started in the 70’s. “The Region” (as they call it) has lost, probably, over 100,000 jobs in the steel and manufacturing sectors over the past two decades. I actually believe that 100,000 would be a conservative number.

In some respects, the textile industry in North Carolina has suffered the same plight as the Northwest Indiana industries. Take a look at the following:

  • 1994—> The Uruguay Round’s Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC) requires countries like the U.S. to phase out import restrictions on textiles and apparel under MFA over the next ten years.—> NAFTA goes into effect.
  • 1999—> Burlington Industries lays off over 2000 workers in six North Carolina textile plants.
  • 2000—> President Clinton signs the Trade and Development Law of 2000. Thislaw consists of the U.S. – Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act (CBTPA) and the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Both of these measures improve trade relations between the U.S. and countries in the Caribbean Basin and Africa.—> Shelby Yarn closes three plants in Shelby and Cherryville, North Carolina, eliminating 650 jobs.
  • 2001—> Westpoint Stevens eliminates 1250 jobs in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
  • 2003—> Kannapolis-based Pillowtex closes five North Carolina plants and eliminates over 4,000 jobs. The Raleigh News and Observer calls it “the single biggest job loss ever in North Carolina (Martinez, 2003).”
  • 2004—> U.S. Congress will be debating and voting on CAFTA, a trade agreement similar to NAFTA that includes Central American countries like El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica.—> New York financier Wilbur Ross decides to create new International Textile Group by merging bankrupt Burlington Industries and Cone Mills. The new textile giant is expected to have annual revenues of $900 million (Lunan, 2004).
  • 2005—> All textile and apparel quotas will be eliminated for 148 WTO nations under ATC.

Since 1993, at least 13,000 jobs in North Carolina has been lost in the textile and furniture production industries due to NAFTA. Indiana has lost over 16,000 jobs to NAFTA in the motor vehicle equipment and electric equipment industries.

I dare a news media rep to go to the towns that lost these jobs and ask the ones who have lost their lively hood, if they are bitter because of free trade agreements that Billary Clinton and Dupya have signed into effect during their tenures in the White House.

I’m sure they’ll get an ear full bitterness.

Imagine what it’s going to be like when the soldiers are brought back to the US. The economy is in shambles due to Dupya’s teams financial and political ineptness. Unemployment is already high. Imagine what’s going to happen when these soldiers get back and they can’t find a job.

What if they feel they can’t get a job because of the illegal immigrant effect on the local job market.

A veteran solider is not going to work for or provide “cheap labor”.

NAFTA NEEDS TO BE RENEGOTIATED.

The racist wing of the Democrat Party has been exposed. Thanks Hillary. Howard Dean, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are shaking in their boots right now. They fear (should know) the racist tone of Hillary’s campaign has caused irreparable harm to what they have always come to rely on, the black vote.

They’re wondering, hoping and praying there are enough white working class people, who typically vote for Republicans, who are willing to vote Democrat come election time.

They think this because of Dupya’s tenure in the White House has made so many people in all walks of life so angry.

What will the Democrat Party do if this doesn’t happen?

I have a suggestion. Go listen to some Justin Timberlake. Cry me a river for all I care. Maybe your much sought after Hispanic constituency will/can replace us.

Oh, I forgot, the white working class don’t like them either.

Hillary, you’ve got some serious kiss-a_s’n to do to get me and the black vote back if you steal this nomination.

Do a back flip. Dance to some Ying Yang Twins. Have a press conference and talk about how your such a fan of Three Six Mafia’s music. I have no doubt that you will try something like this.

Make a fool of yourself like you’ve been doing all along. Do whatever it takes to get back into the White House.

Hillary the Bosnia sniper fire liar vs. the authentic Rambo POW.

Campaigning to Rocky soundtracks can’t even compete with Rambo.

Especially with the coveted “white male vote”.

But a message of hope and accountability does.

North Carolina will demonstrate this.

What the people/voters feel is negative. The exit polls, you now, answers of particular questions from people who voted (since your asking for definitions) tell the story that more voters think the Clinton campaign, that means her and yes you, her staffers, are running a negative campaign.

You want examples? No before I post them, why is that you Clinton staffers/supporters think you can get away with asking such a question like “define negative” in the internet age we’re in? It’s so easy to slap you into reality.

Here are just a few of the examples:

  • the Clinton campaign has pulled a radio ad that quoted the Illinois senator calling Republicans “the party of ideas” and suggesting he thought those ideas superior to Democratic ones.
  • she mocked Obama and his message of hope and change in a very theatrical, over-the-top manner.
  • Clinton Campaign Disguises Negative Flier About Obama’s Health Plan As Product of Edwards Campaign
  • The 3am ad
  • The Clinton campaign is using robocalls to tell Pennsylvanians Obama is not the candidate for them.
  • Congressman Delahunt to address the Negative Clinton Campaign Mailer in Mass
  • accusing the junior senator of being both inexperienced and a talker, not a doer
  • Senator Clinton has suggested that Obabma is all about the “rhetoric,” not substance, saying “You can choose speeches or solutions.”
  • former President Bill Clinton implying that Obama was “not a patriot”

Google them. YOU CAN LIE TO YOURSELVES ABOUT YOUR CANDIDATE NOT BEING NEGATIVE, but it is what it is.

I haven’t even mentioned the Billy Boys comment about Obama’s SC win and Jesse Jackson, or Geraldine Ferraro’s Obama being privileged to be a black candidate comment (she was a member of the Clinton campaign at the time).

How bout this:

Does this help explain why THE PEOPLE think Hillary Clinton is running a negative campaign?

How bout this then:

An excerpt from scummy Dick Morris in an article written November 27, 2007, explaining “How Hillary will go negative”

November 27, 2007 — AS her once-formidable lead in national polls dwindles and Barack Obama moves ahead of her in the all-important Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton will likely intensify her negative campaign against her rivals.

The Clintons’ political MO has always had a good dose of negative campaigning, especially when the going gets rough. There’s no reason to assume that they will alter their game plan now.

I remember Bill’s race for re-election as Arkansas governor back in 1990, when he found himself falling behind Hal McCrae, his unknown Democratic primary opponent. After Clinton’s 10 years as governor, McCrae’s attacks – featuring Daliesque stretched-out clocks tolling the time for him to go – were hitting home. Hillary decided to attend McCrae’s next press conference and engage him in a public, impromptu debate about his attacks on her husband. She gave as good as she got – and her foray marked the start of a four-week campaign of negative ads that brought McCrae down.

The Clintons used negative ads and attacks in each gubernatorial campaign – and, of course, in Bill’s two races for president.-

I can keep going if you’d like…………………..

YOU, CLINTON SUPPORTER/STAFFER, DON’T GET TO SET THE DEFINITION OF WHAT IS NEGATIVE.

I just filled up my tank and the price of a gallon of regular is $3.50 plus at just about every gas station here in Raleigh, NC.

I just had to pay a $333 co-pay for a ct scan for my daughter earlier in the day.

I’m pissed.

I stop by a convience store and over hear several NC candidates for Governor advertisements for my vote while I was in line to pay for an overpriced bottle of Sunkist. All of them say that I need a governor that won’t look out for the special interest people or it’s time for the “not so special interest citizens of the state of NC” to have someone in the Governors house that will look out for them.

I get home, check the news on the net, and I’m inundated with video reports showing Hillary dancing on stage to the tune of Rocky, or reading about Obama asking people can they smell what he’s cookin.

And George W. Bush has the nerve to go to NEW ORLEANS of all places and dances on stage, having a good ole time with some house servant looking brotha with an umbrella dancing with him.

I have no choice but to vote and become involved in the political process no matter what the outcome of the 2008 Presidency for the rest of my life. I will not go down without a fight. The reason I blog now is solely to voice my “perspectives on life and politics from a brotha’s perspective”.

No political candidate speaks for me. I’ve got a decent paying job. I’ve got health insurance. I’ve got a home with a regular mortgage. I’m raising two girls and my spouse is someone with a Master’s Degree who’s had to accept a job paying her far below what she used to make and provide what’s needed to have something left after the important bills are paid, just to pay her student loans that will soon kick in after her deferment expires (she was unemployed for 8 months prior to this February 08).

I am doing great by some other peoples standards, but I am struggling to stay afloat. But I will stay afloat. And I will make my voice heard. I am neither black nor a liberal or a conservative. I am a citizen of these United States of America.

Hopefully, those of you voting for Hillary understands what someone is saying when they say they are voting for Obama more for the revolution that it fuels. Voting for Hillary does not fuel revolution. It brings back some of the same special interest people back into power or keeps some who’s already in power, in place.

The Clinton history of pandering has been “vetted” by ones look back at Bill’s Presidency. Do you think the Clintons are scared of any of us? Hell no. Especially not Bill. He’s shown us that hand.

I want someone who cares what white people are going to say about their moves/decisions. What Black people care about their moves/decisions. What Hispanics and Asians care about their moves/decisions. I want us all to have that weight.

I hope Obama wins. And after him, I hope someone else wins who’s so new to the scene that they too have not been around long enough to owe something to a special interest. They would have to worry about what THE PEOPLE think of his or her decisions as President.

And not let these bastards get away with gouging us at the pump and laying people off because their investors like it when they cut costs and move jobs overseas so the profits can go up so more rich people either here or in Saudi Arabia, Japan or China can buy the stock at a higher cost.

Hopefully, there are enough people out there thinking this way and not the same number of fools who actually voted for GHWB not once, but twice.

I was watching what I believe was the Republican candidates for Governor of NC debate last night. What I find appalling is for the candidates to continue to state that less government leads to increased economic stimulus from business, which leads to more jobs and thus improved living standards in the/your community.

Well, the past six years (minus 2007 and the beginning of 2008) has shown just what having Republicans in control of the U S Senate and House provides when they offer up their tax break for business/rich people so the economy will grow and create more jobs philosophy.

  • A RECESSION!
  • MORE JOBS LOST THEN CREATED THAN AT THE START OF THEIR REGIME
  • HIGHER INFLATION
  • HIGHER FOOD COSTS
  • HIGHER PRICES ON EVERYTHING
  • MORE MONEY IN THE POCKETS OF THE UBER RICH TO SPEND ON TRIPS IN MONACO
  • LESS MONEY IN THE POCKETS OF THE UPPER MIDDLE/MIDDLE/LOWER CLASSES TO SPEND ON THINGS THAT ACTUALLY GROW OUR ECONOMY
  • PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS TO PEOPLE IN INDIA
  • MORE PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS TO PEOPLE FROM INDIA UNDER H1B IN THE U.S.
  • PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS AT RECORD PACES TO NEAR SLAVE LABOR RATE MANUFACTURERS IN CHINA
  • PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS TO LOW WAGE WILLING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN A TOWN NEAR YOU
  • MORE MERGERS OF MEGA CORPORATIONS CREATING MONOPOLIES AND LESS COMPETITION
  • RISING CEO PAY ( 100’S OF MILLIONS), THOUGH THEIR COMPANIES LAY OFF THOUSANDS OF U.S. WORKERS
  • MORE COLLEGE EDUCATED PEOPLE HAVING TO TAKE PAY CUTS FOR NEW JOBS LIKE CIRCUIT CITY OR SALES BECAUSE THEY WERE LAID OFF THEN TOLD THROUGH THE PRESS THAT THE TECHNOLOGY COMPANY THAT LAID THEM OFF CAN’T FIND QUALIFIED U.S. APPLICANTS SO THEY HAVE TO BRING IN PEOPLE FROM INDIA VIA THE H1B PROGRAM
  • THE HIGHEST GAS PRICES EVER SEEN IN THE U.S.
  • THE HIGHEST PROFITS OIL COMPANIES HAVE EVER SEEN
  • THE HOUSING SUBPRIME DEBACLE
  • THE BAIL OUT BY THE GOVERNMENT OF BUSINESSES TIED TO THE STOCK MARKET
  • HURRICANE KATRINA
  • COPORATE SCANDAL LIKE ENRON
  • THE MOST EMBARRASSING PRESIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATION IN MY LIFETIME (I BETTER NOT EVER HEAR ANYONE COMPLAIN ABOUT JIMMY CARTER AGAIN)
  • I WON’T EVEN MENTION AN UNJUSTIFIED WAR (FOR MONEY FOR THE UBER RICH THROUGH GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS; AND JUST WHERE DOES THOSE IRAQ OIL SALES GO TO ?)

I thought tax breaks that Republicans (including John McCain) want to make permanent helps create a robust economy. LISTEN FOLKS, the current administration is stalling, holding off as long as they can from stating the U.S. is in a recession so they can say after 2008 that no official word was ever given that the U.S. went into a recession in 2008 or 2007. KARL ROVE POLITICS BABY!

The tax breaks did nothing but tank the economy. WHEN A U.S. BIG BUSINESS IS GIVEN A TAX BREAK, THEY DON’T REINVEST THE BREAKS (MONEY) INTO THE COMPANY IN ORDER TO CREATE MORE JOBS! LIKE A CO-WORKER OF MINE ONCE TOLD ME, U.S. BUSINESSES AREN’T IN THE BUSINESS OF CREATING JOBS! THEIR IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MONEY! PRIMARILY THROUGH THEIR STOCK PRICES! THEY TAKE THE MONEY FROM TAX BREAKS AND SPEND IT ON THEMSELVES ( LIKE TRIPS TO MONACO OR GOLD SHOWER CURTAIN RINGS OR SOMETHING)

6 OF THE 7 PAST YEARS HAVE PROVED THIS. The Republicans had control of the US Senate, The House and the Presidency! They had what they wanted. Remember the Contract with America? It was the contract with American Businesses, not with you, Joe U.S. Citizen!

They have the gall to make political speeches about liberals. Republican Joe’s have the audacity to say the word “liberal” with such disgust when referring to a Democrat. THEY ARE THE DISGUSTING ONES. SCREW LIBERAL AND CONSERVATIVE MONIKERS PEOPLE!

You’ve got these idiots who just lost value in their home, or their jobs, or have seen their grocery bills and gas bills skyrocket, yet they still drive around with a “W” sticker on the back of their SUV’S and still proudly claim to be a Republican and that their “Republican Values” are better than yours.

Back to the candidates; These Republican candidates were so absolute in their tone when stating how out of touch the Democrat candidates are with reality on how to run this state effectively. Like anything less than a Republican Governor would be uncivilized (add the Grey Poupon tone).

The sad part about it is, THEY MIGHT BE RIGHT! The Democrats in this State are as corrupt as any Republican. All I got to tell you is to look up political scandal in the State of NC the past 6 or 7 years and see what I mean.

BUT I KNOW ONE THING, THEY (REPUBLICANS) ARE CERTAINLY NO BETTER AND I’LL SAY FAR MORE CORRUPT.

The one from Johnston county kept talking about how he know’s business because he owns one ( a construction business with a bunch of illegal immigrants as employees I bet; to cut costs) and how he cut something in Johnston County by like a million dollars.

These fools actually want the State Government Smaller! NC State Government Services already suck!

I can’t even get my driver’s license renewed without having to wait in line for an hour, then wait another hour to be serviced, all in all taking 3 hours to get a new address on my drivers license! IT’S BECAUSE THEIR UNDER STAFFED! BECAUSE SOME FOOL SURELY CREATED A BILL IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO CUT THE BUDGET OF THE DMV TO MAKE GOVERNMENT SMALLER! And that was probably, gulp, A N.C. DEMOCRAT SENATOR!

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
